If you have had at least one child and are interested in revrsible, long-term birth control that may also offer relief from your premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (pmdd) symptoms, talk to your doctor about a progesterone impregnated IUD. Unlike a traditional IUD, a progesterone impregnated intrauterine device (IUD). An IUD is a T-shaped long-term birth control device that your doctor inserts into your uterus. Some IUDs are impregnated with progesterone which is released into your body over time causing you to experience shorter, lighter periods, or or even no periods. Some women indicate that it improves PMS symptoms. Because these IUDs also act as time-release vehicles for progesterone, they are sometimes called an intrauterine system (IUS).
Mirena, which is impregnated with a synthetic progesterone called levenogesterol, is currently the only progesterone IUS on the market. Contrel is developing another lower-dose levenogesterol releasing IUS that will be marketed under te name Femilis and Femilis Slim. Contrel has also had successful clinical trials with an IUS called FibroPlant-LNG which is not T-shaped and is anchored differently than a traditional IUD.
